Advice

Be aware of the people that you help or come in your line. I met a lot of people that can help me in the near future and one lady who was able to help me find scholarships.

Sales Associate

March 2015 - August 2017 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

Everything! Especially helping the customers find what they were looking for. It is always a good feeling when you make someone else happy because of the clothes they are going to be wearing!

What I wish was different

Management, but I think everyone thinks that about entry level jobs.

Advice

Always smile and say hello to customers! You never know who you are going to be helping. I have literally walked up to a customer and it ended up being my managers mother-in-law . You literally just never know!

Store Management Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved how much responsibility I was given. I acted as an independent member of the management team, my mentor was in the Ready to Wear family of business, so I management a number of private label counters, and oversaw all of the floors carrying Women's clothing. I also loved how I had the freedom to select the focus of my summer project, and was able to shadow corporate walk-thrus to get maximum exposure.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more focus on retail math, data analytics, and hard skills. I grew immensely as a leader and left feeling inspired and motivated to apply my new communication and customer service skills, but felt I missed out on some of the harder skills that the position involves. Analyzing department sales, presenting business figures, and calculating data to drive business, was skimmed over, but not in much detail.

Advice

I would tell any new intern to utilize all the leader's they are exposed to. I became close with my mentor and our management team, but wish I had taken the initiative to shadow in other areas of the business, such as Macy's.com's office, or meet with the store marketing directors to learn about their position.

Signer/Merchandiser/Pricer

July 2015 - September 2018 • Altamonte Springs, FL

What I liked

I liked the relaxed work environment. It wasn't an added stress on my life, which is great for school.

What I wish was different

There really wasn't anything bad about it. Perhaps, it would have been nice to not have to wake up as early as I did when I worked there. (5am)

Advice

Just do your job, honestly. Its surprising that that is sometimes too much to ask.

Sales Associate

May 2018 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

The Employee Discounts, flexibility on hours for my position

What I wish was different

I wish that associates don't have to work 5 different areas at once when assigned one specific position, basically it's quite understaffed and sometimes managers expect us to work more than we can handle (fitting rooms, register, recovering the floor, etc.) But most of the time they understand.

Advice

I learned quite a lot about customer service and how department stores work and now i can sympathize more with workers.

Store Management and Merchandising Intern

June - August 2018 • Schaumburg, IL

What I liked

Hands on learning in both a store and the district office. Never a slow moment

What I wish was different

Nothing honestly- Macy's did such a good job showing me different roles

Advice

Be open minded about being in a store for a lot of the internship. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but now I'm so excited to go back!

Merchandising associate

June 2018 - August 2019 • Spokane, WA

What I liked

The position allowed for flexible hours and allowed associates to plan their schedules around other obligations outside of the work environment. In addition, there was a good balance between working on your own and as part of a team.

What I wish was different

One job aspect which should be improved upon would be the on-site training. Many of the skills required for the position were not instructed in the on-site training, and were rather learned '"on the fly."

Advice

This position certainly enhances people skills and the ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team. Also, be prepared for early mornings (4-5am) as most of the work done by the merchandising team is done before store opening (10a).

Fulfillment

May - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I liked the actual job because I'd always wondered how shipping worked and got to be a part of a team that did that.

What I wish was different

I wish it hadn't been such an isolated job, most of the time I had to work alone and I work better in teams.

Advice

Take this job as a learning experience for future jobs. Sometimes its not the best job, but it definitely prepares you for a future situation.

Commissioned Sales Associate

October 2016 - June 2018 • Skokie, IL

What I liked

It was a nice experience as it was my first time being under commission, so my paycheck pretty much depended on my ability to sell to customers. I got to also get familiar with and meet a lot of different types of customers and people in general.

What I wish was different

I wish that the organization aspect of the stock rooms was a little different, because there were often times it would be hard to find what I was looking for because the stock rooms would not be organized.

Advice

The customer is always right. There may be times where you feel frustrated by the way a customer is acting, but it is important for you to keep your cool and not let it bother you too much.

Store Management Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Immersive Experience, learned the roles of a Store Management team and a OVM (Operations and Visual Merchandising team). Spent time in three rotational programs in my 8 weeks there and grasped different store concepts, customer relationship management and organizational roles as a leadership executive.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was more organized and their was clear direction given to my mentors/store executives. At times we had no clear role and were just expected to know what we were in charge of for the day. If there had been more direction from the hiring team/internship coordinators, our store would have been better prepared on how to coach and teach us.

Advice

Be prepared for an immersive experienced and go in open minded. The program has different hours than a 9-5 corporate job would have. Also be open minded to the placement you are given, it may not be your top choice and there isn't wiggle room to get moved to a closer location- meaning you may have a commute longer than you would like. Be prepared for a retail job, which can allow for a difficulty in work-life balance.

Store Management Intern

June - August 2022 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I really loved how involved I was. In no way was I treated like a desk jockey, as I was placed among the management team. I got to meet store executives(Including the CFO) and I was included in company-wide calls with my store manager. I was provided mentors who were very interested in my growth and development and also provided great feedback in mid-point and final performance evaluations.

What I wish was different

Your experience is somewhat dependent on your location. Some locations will yield better development and experience than others. If you've had previous experience in retail and you didn't like it, this job is not for you.

Advice

Make an effort to put yourself out there and showcase your curiosity. Macy's really values interns who take initiative and effectively communicate. Don't put too much pressure on yourself though since, at the end of the day, you're an intern. This is supposed to be a learning experience.

Store Management Intern

June - August 2021 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I was given a lot of freedom and responsibility in this role. My mentor and other managers trusted me immediately to start making decisions around the store and knew I was capable of handling multiple tasks at once. The team was very caring and made me feel included, from celebrating my birthday, having me attend team lunches, and recognizing my achievements in management meetings.

What I wish was different

I wish communication had been better throughout the entire experience. Coming into a retail setting (without any prior experience) in the midst of a pandemic is challenging and hectic, but a bit more clarification on internship timelines would have been very helpful. As I said before, this internship was pretty hands-off in terms of my mentor constantly monitoring me, which was nice at some points but I often found myself wishing I had been more thoroughly trained.

Advice

Be confident in yourself. Being given so much responsibility and tasks may be overwhelming at first but by the end you'll find yourself answering questions of employees who have worked there for decades. And vice versa, ask your coworkers questions! They are a great source of information and most have experienced many of the things you'll be asked to do.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I wish was different

It was remote because of COVID, and I wish it could have been in person in NYC.

Advice

It could lead to a potential job so make sure you take it very seriously and give it your all.

Marketing Intern

June - July 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I gained invaluable skills during my time at Macy's. I shadowed meetings and developed a strong understanding of what goes into Macy’s campaigns and projects from a project management perspective. Through intern events, I learned about the retail industry, how it is changing, how a large company manages social publishing, and much more. I also had the opportunity to work with a team of interns to develop an innovative business idea that would help drive one of Macy’s Polaris Strategies. My team and I developed a three-pronged sustainability initiative aimed at building connections with Under 40 shoppers. We even had the chance to pitch our idea to senior leaders in a presentation competition!

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were online for the duration of the internship. I wish there had been an opportunity to meet everyone in person, but I understand why that was not possible. Other than that, it was a great experience!

Advice

Take advantage of the people around you! Everyone at Macy’s is so nice and happy to meet with you and talk about their job, career path, experiences, and offer you advice. It is easy to set these meetings up (just send an email!) and you will learn a ton of valuable information that will help you better understand the company and figure out your own next steps.
