• Patrols assigned areas to enforce all laws and regulations, preserves peace and provides security and detect violators.
• Responds to and investigates motor vehicle accidents, provides medical assistance, requests fire, ambulance and air care, and establishes and secures landing zones as needed.
• Assists stranded motorists.
• Responds to calls for medical assistance, provides first aide care, assists ambulance and rescue crews in patient assessment and treatment; assists in preparation and lifting patients.
• Investigates criminal activity, domestic disputes, death scenes, and assaults; conducts interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects; processes crime scenes and assists investigator by providing information, additional processing of crime scenes, and conducting follow-up investigations as needed.
• Responds to emergency calls for assistance and other in-progress calls such as domestic assaults, break-ins, robberies, assaults, and assaults with deadly weapons, or critical incidents requiring immediate attention and quick response.
• Pursues, apprehends and arrests persons involved with criminal activity, on foot or in motor vehicles at high rates of speed and if required uses pursuit intervention techniques and vehicle to vehicle contact as trained to end the pursuit and preserve life and property. 
• Investigates all watercraft, ATV OHM, ORV, and snowmobile accidents and deaths on county lakes, waterways, trails and roads; investigates complaints, interviews witnesses and suspects, completes accident reports and enforces all laws, rules and ordinances as applicable.
• Investigates fish, game, and wildlife violations such as trespassing, hunting and fishing violations.
• Communicates with and de-escalates volatile situations involving persons who are mentally ill or under the influence of; narcotics, stimulants, depressants, PCP, cannabis, hallucinogens, inhalants or other mood altering hazardous or controlled substances.
• Conducts safe and sober and DWI saturation patrol operations; prepares and distributes press releases, trains deputies in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and occupant protection programs, conducts field analysis and surveys of occupant protection usage, prepares and submits safe and sober reports to Minnesota Department of Public Safety; detects and arrests impaired drivers, conducts breath alcohol test and/or urinary or blood evidence collection kits; fills out appropriate forms for submission to County Attorney, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and Commissioner of Public Safety.   
• Coordinates search and rescue operations on land or water for lost, missing or drowned persons, may involve utilizing multiple agencies and Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, and specialized personnel such as; rescue divers.
• Conducts crowd and riot control at fires, accidents, bar fights, and other major events.
• Investigates and completes reports of dangerous, lost, stray animals/ reptiles, and deals with animals according to State Statute or other reasonable means.
• Counsels juveniles and adults in crisis intervention and facilitates family crisis intervention.
• Serves Civil and Criminal complaints, execution summons, subpoenas, complaints, warrants, and harassment/ protection orders; arrests and transports on outstanding warrants within and out of county.
• Responds to variety of nuisance complaints, such as; loud noise/party complaints, animal at large complaints, barking dogs, juvenile and or adult drinking and or drug parties fireworks, etc.      
• Councils, instructs, makes recommendations, conducts field training of new deputies, prepares daily performance reports and makes recommendations to administration.
• Testifies in court as arresting or investigating officer in criminal and civil matters; consults with attorneys regarding legal issues and case preparations; prepares necessary reports, logs, forms, evidence, and correspondence as required.
• Reads and understands Supreme, Appellate, and District court decisions regarding work-related issues, such as; traffic enforcement, search and seizure, use of force, investigatory stops, etc.
• Attends required training classes and continuing education classes; completes qualifications necessary to maintain POST license and other certificates, such as; First responder, CPR, Pursuit driving, pursuit intervention techniques, firearms qualifications, use of force, less lethal, and other specialized certifications, (i.e SFST, DRE, firearms instructor, taser instructor, use of force instructor, etc.)
• Maintains proficiency in the use of squad cars/patrol vehicles, patrol/rescue boats, patrol/rescue snowmobiles, patrol/rescue atv’s and accompanying instruments such as; lights, siren, mobile data computer, squad car video camera, radar speed detecting device, patrol rifle, patrol shotgun, defibrillator, first responder kit and oxygen kits; conducts maintenance, and safety checks of these items as well as cleaning and upkeep.  
• Maintains firearm proficiency in; duty weapons, Glock handgun, AR-15, M-16, M-14, shotguns, tasers and off-duty weapons.
• Maintains knowledge and proficiency in computers and related software, such as; Computer Information Systems (CIS), National Crime Information Center, Microsoft word, Packet Cluster, Cerulean, DVS website, Predatory Offender website, State Legislature website, etc.
• Responds to and assists Jail and Correction Deputies with defiant and out-of-control inmates.
• Provides security for visiting dignitaries, courthouse, court rooms, crime scenes and a variety of other people and places within our county.  
• Works with Department of Homeland Security, Red Cross and Civil defense personnel during severe or threatening weather, disasters natural or manmade, such as; fires, flooding, tornadoes, and terrorist attacks. Identify possible terrorist targets; hospitals, schools, busses, animal confinement farms, fuel, propane facilities, natural gas deposits and gas companies, food-processing facilities, etc.
• Performs physical demands and work environment requirements for this position.
