ESL INSTRUCTOR - Part Time

Job Description

The English as a Second Language ESL Instructor is primarily responsible for teaching basic skills to students with varying academic levels. The ESL program designed to focus on developing English language skills in the context of topics or functions of daily life, such as: the family, schools, banking, jobs, shopping, emergency information/situations, hobbies, etc.
The LCM provides basic, foundation instruction to the adult learner so that they are able to connect to other institutions of higher learning and thrive. The primary objective of the Adult Basic Education Program of the Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM) is to assist our adult students in their attainment of goals, aspirations and dreams so that they can provide more solid futures for their families and their community.

The Latino Center of the Midlands is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the self-sufficiency and self-determination of Heartland Latino families and community by providing bilingual, high quality social, educational, economic, and advocacy services.
Primary responsibilities
  • Teach adults how to read and write.
  • Lessons focus on vocabulary development, fluency, articulation and comprehension.
  • Create and follow lesson plans.
  • The ESL teacher also helps the student and family understand U.S. culture and social norms.
  • Utilize various curriculum resources.
  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans.
  • Incorporate specific, measurable, behavioral objectives and timeframes.
  • Utilize various instructional methods, including tactile, visual, and aural learning preferences.
  • Work with students on an individual basis.
  • Incorporate real-world context into classroom settings.
  • Promote active classroom participation.
  • Provide quarterly academic reports.
  • Provide students with suggestions and feedback.
  • Implement continuous improvement plan.
  • Assist in the recruitment of participants, including participating in community outreach programs.
  • Develop incentives to keep participants in class.
  • Develop professional relationships with other agencies and programs
  • Work with program coordinators to ensure initiatives are being met.
  • Use interactive and participatory methods to empower students.
Qualifications
The ESL Instructor will:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with training and/or experience in ESL.
  • Experience teaching and/or working with adults.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with a variety of people, in a variety of team situations.
  • Be a bilingual (English/Spanish) professional with strong writing and speaking skills;
  • Possess a professional manner that exemplifies attention to detail, confidentiality, patience, and a positive attitude toward work and the students we serve.
