Library Communication Manager

THE POSITION
Excellent communicator needed to spread the message of public library resources and opportunities to connect to our communities! Come join Hennepin County and the Hennepin County Library as a Communication Manager. As Communication Manager for Hennepin County Library, you will lead communication efforts, particularly in areas related to strategic communication planning, public spaces and outreach tactics across Hennepin County Library's 41 locations plus the Law Library. You will support communication of how work in libraries and by library staff in community supports reduction of disparity gaps, particularly in the areas of education, employment, health and justice. This job may be a fit for you if you have the ability to listen closely to subject matter experts and to coordinate creative enthusiasm and tailored responses to community needs to craft coherent larger messages for the library system as a whole.

Location and hours:
This position is full time and located at the Ridgedale Library 12601 Ridgedale Dr, Minnetonka, MN 55305. The hours are flexible from 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
 
In this position, you will:         
  • Develop and direct all formal communication efforts to raise external visibility and understanding of Hennepin County Library (HCL) programs and services.
  • Lead media strategy; coordinate identification of spokespeople as needed. Train, coach and support managers and supervisors in their interactions with the media.
  • Counsel Library Director, Senior Team, program managers and supervisors on communication tactics and develop or organize content for them to present to the public, staff, Hennepin County board, and Library Board.
  • Supervise the Library's Communication team including two graphic artists, social media manager, and communication coordinator who leads project traffic management as they deliver projects and provide specialized expertise and support to managers and supervisors across the Library.
  • Manage vendor relationships in partnership with Hennepin County Communications and IT to support online tools including digital asset management and printers.
 
Need to have:
One of the following:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, mass communications, or other field appropriate to the position and five or more years of experience related to organizational communication coordination.
  • Nine or more years of experience related to organizational communication coordination.

Nice to have:   
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in strategic communication planning, non-profit communication, public communication best practices and organizational message development.
  • Knowledge of public library services and resources, K-12 educational systems and literacy non-profits.
  • Experience:
  • Coordinating the creative contributions of graphic designers, videographers, photographers, web and social media developers and other modality specialists needed to develop and deliver effective communication materials.
  • Supervising an organizational communications team.
  • Writing grants.
  • Ability to:
  • Establish and foster collaborative working relationships with internal and external contacts at all levels of responsibility.
  • Lead staff through the transformational and cultural shifts required to implement comprehensive, integrated delivery of Library resources, programs and services.
  • Foster an environment that recognizes and respects cultural, lifestyle, and socioeconomic differences and provide culturally appropriate services.
