Job Summary
Job Summary
This position will advance the Department of Revenue's mission to achieve compliance with Minnesota tax laws. The tax specialist will conduct audits of amended individual income tax and amended property tax refund returns during return processing; provide education and technical assistance to taxpayers; test system updates and changes; and participate in other compliance activities.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
One (1) year of professional-level accounting or auditing experience
AND
Any of the following from an accredited college or university:
- Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Business Management or Marketing;
- Master's degree in Business Administration, Accountancy, Finance, or Taxation; or
- CPA
OR
Certification (satisfactory completion of probation) as a Revenue Tax Specialist
Applicants who meet the above experience requirements will be further evaluated based on the following:
- Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices
- Technical tax knowledge, including court rulings, regulations and administrative policies and procedures
- Customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to plan, direct and review the work of others
- Knowledge of personal computer operation and software programs used by the department in its internal and external operations
- Communication and presentation skills
- Knowledge of audit report processing procedures
- Knowledge of electronic filing/processing systems
- Skill in reading comprehension
- Skill in problem-solving
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with amended Individual income tax and amended property tax refund return.
Experience making sound judgements without complete information.
Knowledge of the department's penalty and interest statutes and policies.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to work with multiple competing priorities.
Human relations skills which would allow one to meet and deal with taxpayers and handle difficult people.
Physical Requirements
Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
Additional Requirements
Prior to an offer of employment, a background check will be conducted. This will include, but is not limited to checking degrees and licensures, criminal history, and tax filing and payment history. All individual income tax filing and payment obligations must be current prior to interviewing for this position.
Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
