Engineer II/III/Senior

Minnesota Power is an electric utility company headquartered in Duluth, MN. We provide electricity in a 26,000 square mile service area in northeastern Minnesota containing about 145,000 residential and commercial customers, municipalities and some of the nation’s largest industrial customers. We are currently seeking a skilled Electrical Engineer II/III/Senior to join its Relay and Maintenance Engineering team.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This person will be responsible for the development of protective relay configuration files and performance of short circuit and arc flash studies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in protective relay theory and application. 
  • Develop protective relay configuration files and provide relay testing guidance for generation, transmission, and distribution capital and maintenance projects.
  • Review and develop protective relay logic drawings.
  • Provide relay engineering support for capital and maintenance projects to field personal.
  • Work with System Operations on real-time protective relaying concerns.
  • Post disturbance relay event analysis and report protective relay operation/misoperation data per NERC PRC requirements
  • Ensure Minnesota Power complies with NERC PRC and CIP standards by being a NERC PRC standard owner.
  • Promotes positive change in Minnesota Power business strategy through achievements of customer specific objectives and technological innovation.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Engineer Senior: Minimum eight years of protective relay engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer license.
  • Engineer III: Minimum four years of protective relay engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer license.
  • Engineer II: Minimum two years protective relay engineering experience.
  • Engineer in Training certificate.
  • A master’s degree in engineering may be equivalent for up to one year of related experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Driver's license required. 
  • Provide personal vehicle for work related transportation on a mileage reimbursement plan.
  • Must participate in a continuing environment of teamwork, which is highly supportive of peers.
  • Requires a high level of interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Functional, demonstrable computer query and analysis capability is a necessity.
  • After hours and out of town travel is occasionally required.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude. Internal and external candidates will be considered.
