DESIGN ENGINEER

Engineers in Anoka County not only develop plans, but also establish strong working relationships with stakeholders. Engineers design safe and cost-effective solutions to some of the northern metro's most complex design challenges. As an important member of the dedicated design group, you will help manage and deliver high quality designs, while growing your career in a supportive and team-focused environment.

This full-time, benefit-eligible position is located at the Anoka County Highway Department. We are looking to fill one position dependent on candidate qualifications.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Design Engineer.
 Engineer I
  • Assists in design and drafting of highway projects.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of MnDOT standards, specifications, and special provisions for highway and bridge design.
  • Assists in the construction inspection of county highway projects.
  • Performs topographical surveying and assists in construction staking of construction projects.
  Engineer II
  • Tracks highway development and city plans from inception to design and follows through on the internal and external approval process. 
  • Assists in the construction inspection of county highway projects.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of MnDOT standards, specifications, and special provisions for highway and bridge design.
 
Engineer III
  • Performs as lead designer on projects as assigned.
  • Develops highway designs from conception through project delivery.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of MnDOT standards, specifications, and special provisions for highway and bridge design; understand requirements, construction cost estimating and design software advancements.
  • Works directly with stakeholders during the design of highway projects.
  • Directs the work of Engineer I and II and Engineer Technician I, II, III and IV.
  REQUIREMENTS
 Engineer I Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from a school accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) curriculum.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history and driver's license background check.
 
Engineer II Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from a school accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) curriculum.
  • 2 years' full-time (2,080 annual hours) of highway design experience.
  • Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history and driver's license background check.
 
Engineer III Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from a school accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) curriculum.
  • 3 years' full-time (2,080 annual hours) of highway design experience.
  • Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history and driver's license background check.
  Knowledge of:
  • Highway design and the State Aid Design Manual.
  • MnDOT Road Design Manual and MnDOT specifications.
  • Federal Aid Project Development.
  • Microstation and Geopak.
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint.
Skill in:
  • Written and oral communication. 
 Ability to:
  • Coordinate multiple design projects concurrently.
  • Represent the Highway Department to outside agencies and the public in a professional manner.
 
 Work Environment: 
  • Design Engineers primarily work in an office setting
 
GRADE LEVEL
Anoka County is looking to fill one position dependent on candidate qualifications. This posting will also be used to establish a list for future vacancies for Engineer I, II and III job openings.
Engineer I Salary
Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade B111, Non-Exempt.
Normal hiring range: $48,214 to $56,784 ($23.18 to $27.30 per hour).
2019 full salary range: $48,214 to $82,492 ($23.18 to $39.66 per hour).
Upon successful completion of an initial hire probationary period, employees may be eligible for a pay rate increase.
 
Engineer II Salary
Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade C012, Exempt.
Normal hiring range: $54,475 to $66,560 ($26.19 to $32.00 per hour).
2019 full salary range: $48,422 to $75,592 ($23.28 to $34.90 per hour). Career potential up to $42.61 ($88,628 per hour).
Upon successful completion of an initial hire probationary period, employees may be eligible for a pay rate increase.
 
Engineer III Salary
Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade C013, Exempt.
Normal hiring range: $53,414 to $79,830 ($25.68 - $38.38 per hour).
2019 full salary range: $53,414 to $96,286 ($25.68 to $46.29 per hour).
Upon successful completion of an initial hire probationary period, employees may be eligible for a pay rate increase.
Hours
Full-time; 40 hours per pay week.
Work schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Schedule may vary based on business needs and at supervisor discretion.
Selection Process
The examination/selection process for this classification will consist of a review of your training and experience from the application materials submitted. The most qualified candidates will be invited for an oral exam.
