Adult Basic Education Instructor

Hennepin County Library is seeking a part-time benefit earning Adult Basic Education Instructor to work at the Franklin Learning Center (FLC) in Minneapolis, MN. The FLC provides free, flexible instruction tailored to individual adult learners' needs. FLC is located in the lower level of the beautifully renovated Franklin Library.

This position will be part of a team of staff and volunteers who assist adult learners in the study of English, conversation, math, life skills and technology, as well as helping prepare them for the U.S. citizenship and GED tests. This position will work directly with volunteers, matching them with learners. This position is responsible for the orientation of the volunteers and managing the learning center space.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Assist in the management of the Franklin Learning Center (FLC) which includes: greeting incoming learners and volunteers, matching volunteers with learners, consulting with learners on their learning goals, and connecting volunteers and students with library resources.
  • Provide small group and 1:1 instruction in English, conversation, math, and preparation for the GED and U.S. citizenship exam.
  • Educate adult learners about computer basics, technology, and how to use educational software.
  • Administer testing and develop learning plans for adult learners.
  • Collaborate with team members on special projects.
  • Understand and respect cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services.
Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in public administration, business administration, or other field appropriate to the position.
    • Experience in education, teaching or in a specialty area appropriate to the position maybe substituted for education on a year for year basis.
  • Experience and/or training in adult education.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with staff, adult learners, volunteers and patrons from diverse backgrounds, while working cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of computers and the ability to assist patrons and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills.
