HS21+/GED/ABE Instructor

Position Summary

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) invites applications for a full-time, one-year, non-tenured position in HS21+/GED/ABE. In the winter of 2019, BBCC intends to advertise for a permanent, tenure-track HS21+/GED/ABE Instructor. The incumbent instructor would be eligible to apply for the permanent position. This position will work with pre-college education programs to prepare students to earn a HS21+ degree, GED, and complete Adult Basic Education courses. HS21+, GED, ABE classes are open-entry, multi-level, and multi-disciplined. The successful candidate is expected to teach classes which include a wide range of subjects such as history, science, math, English, art, and electives.
 
BBCC is a rural community college located in the sunny, central part of Washington State and accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Big Bend Community College is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and serves approximately 5,000 students annually, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,100, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site, online instruction, and interactive classrooms.

Essential Job Duties

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Teach High School 21+ (HS21+), GED, and Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses. Assignments are determined by college needs and/or the individual's background and experience and may include day and evening/night/weekend classes.
  • Act as a resource for associate faculty in the HS21+, GED, ABE, ESL, and IBEST department.
  • Facilitate HS21+ faculty discussions around awarding of High School credits to adults, especially within the context of IBEST and accelerated learning.
  • Design and implement instruction that facilitates achievement of established learning outcomes for assigned courses.
  • Actively engage in course and program assessment activities.
  • Provide academic advising and support to advance students toward their educational goals and transition to credit-bearing coursework at the college.
  • Participate in on-going curriculum development, revision, and implementation based on College and Career Readiness Standards and HS21+ standards as well as other statewide initiatives related to moving students further and faster along an educational or career pathway.
  • Work collaboratively with the Dean of Transitional Studies in the implementation of program procedures related to CASAS testing, awarding of high school credit and maintaining WABERS data integrity.
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through appropriate instructional means, including but not limited to developing master course outlines, course syllabi, handouts, and materials supporting the instructional process; evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback.
  • Participate in college governance, including attending and participating in faculty departmental meetings and serving on campus committees.
  • Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support; student financial aid requirements, and safety and health issues and related administrative processes; follow established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, and office support.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and students to cultivate a campus climate of inclusion, equity, and respect, and is a contributing member of the campus community.
  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration and staff.
  • Perform other duties as agreed upon by the division chair and administrator.

  • Evidence of a teaching philosophy that is appropriate to the mission, vision, and values of Big Bend Community College.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, adult education, developmental studies or related area (English or Math) from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Two years of K-12, IBEST, or other accelerated team teaching models and/or developmental education teaching experience.
  • Experience working with disadvantaged, at-risk, and multi-cultural populations.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in education, adult education, developmental studies, or related area (English or Math) from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience working with standards-based instruction, CASAS Assessment, WABERS+ data systems.
  • Experience with initiatives and/or programs that successfully transition students from basic skills coursework to educational pathways such as Integrated Basic Education Skills Training (IBEST) or similar models.
  • Participation in initiatives that increase student success in transitions from basic skills to developmental education and beyond.
  • Experience in the use and delivery of distance education technologies such as Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, etc.
  • Experience or interest in using a variety of student-centered instructional and assessment techniques.
  • Demonstrated multicultural experience (fluency in other languages, work experience, or literary/cultural/travel experience) which add breadth and depth to teaching.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English proficiency.
