Accountant

SALARY: $21.49 - $23.14/Hour

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The Minnehaha County Highway Department invites applications for an Accountant to join our administrative team.  Our Accountant is responsible for maintaining the department's accounting and budgeting systems and coordinates with other individuals within the organization to ensure department expenditures are accounted for accurately.

 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES INCLUDE:

Perform accounting duties in support of the County's financial system including accounts payable, inventory, and maintenance costs of roads and bridges. Assign expenditures to appropriate accounts. Complete and process purchase orders.

Compile, analyze, and prepare accounting reports detailing the financial operations of the department including monthly financial summaries and annual financial reports in support of the South Dakota State Legislative Audit and the annual audit.

Maintain budgeting system in support of expenditures made to carry out project activities.

Post disbursements and receipts. Balance against records. Maintain department ledgers in accordance with the South Dakota State Legislative Audit Manual.

Review expenditures and balance sheet transactions to ensure compliance with applicable laws and policies. Provide information and assistance to other agencies and the public through direct, telephone, and mail contact.

Prepare correspondence, reports, forms, and other applicable items requiring some independent judgment while insuring accuracy and timeliness. Respond to requests for information. Provide assistance to individuals regarding financial aspects of highway.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree in accounting or business management plus three years of progressively responsible clerical accounting work. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. Possession of a valid driver's license and must maintain a safe driving record with Minnehaha County. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Working knowledge of the principles and methods of clerical accounting and the ability to make accurate mathematical calculations. Skill in operating a personal computer accurately with reasonable speed. Ability to maintain complex fiscal records. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in accounting or business management. Working knowledge of government requirements, forms, and reports relating to administration of funds for the Highway Department. Knowledge of the South Dakota State Legislative Audit guidelines.
