Required Qualifications:

Associates degree or two years formal training in subject matter directly related to the mission of the laboratory.  Two years full-time experience directly related to the mission of the laboratory.  Experience with molecular biology/biochemistry/cell culture laboratory procedures.  Experience following specific instructions. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or higher degree in Biochemistry or a related field.  Experience with molecular biology.  Two years or more of laboratory experience in a research setting.  Experience with basic biochemistry techniques such as immunoblotting, basic spectroscopy, and basic enzyme assays.  Experience with protein expression and purification using bacterial, insect and mammalian cell culture.  Experience with proper cell/tissue culture techniques and immunofluorescence light microscopy.  Experience with the biophysical or structural characterization of proteins.  Experience with membrane proteins.

Brief Description of Duties:

In Dr. Jarrod French's Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, working under general supervision, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of routine and semi-skilled tasks to support and directly assist advanced research projects in the lab on the functional, structural and mechanistic characterization of proteins and protein complexes involved in metabolism, signal transduction, and the immune response. The successful candidate will assist in research projects and help maintain lab inventory and equipment. The successful incumbent must have outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving.  Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.

• Under the guidance of PI, conduct research and gather data using various methods.
• Assist PI and laboratory personnel with experiments by carrying out cloning (and other molecular biology), protein expression tests, protein purification, enzyme assays, crystallization trials, electrophoresis, immunoblotting, light microscopy, and related tasks.
• Preparation of reagents, media, and maintenance of cell lines; receipt of stock and general organization of laboratory reagents and labware.
• Provide assistance and support to students or other new lab personnel.
• Cleaning and sterilization of all laboratory glassware using Autoclave machine.
• Maintain laboratory records, generate written and oral reports of research work performed.
• Other duties or projects as assigned. Laboratory cleaning and maintenance of supplies according to SBU Laboratory Safety guidelines.
