Environmental Protection Specialist I
Under direct supervision of the Rockford Region Manager, Field Operation Section (FOS), in the Bureau of Land (BOL), performs beginning level routine field inspections/investigations individually or with professional staff; assists higher level specialists in drawing conclusions that ultimately lead to preliminary recommendations for approval or denial of permits and enforcement; assists with technical reports pertaining to the appropriate rules and regulations.
Education and Experience: Requires knowledge, skill and mental development
equivalent to the completion of four years of college with coursework in
physical, life, or environmental science. Requires one year of professional
experience in pollution abatement or a related field.
Specific Job
Requirements: Requires ability to participate in the medical monitoring program
and to pass a physical examination, which is intended to determine whether a
person can wear respiratory protection and function in high heat stress
situations while wearing chemical protective clothing; capable of wearing an air
purifying respirator for a long period of time (e.g. ten hours with only short
15 minute breaks); carry and utilize a self-contained breathing apparatus
(weighing approximately 25 pounds). In addition to wearing respiratory
protection mentioned above, ability to wear chemical resistant clothing in high
heat stress situations while performing strenuous physical tasks (e.g. carrying
equipment up a steep ravine at a temperature of 100F); to lift heavy equipment
(e.g. 45 pounds); hearing and eye sight must be good or correctable for ability
to respond to emergency field conditions; requires ability to travel with
possible overnight stays, and requires a valid Illinois driver's license when
driving to the sites, facilities, and meetings.
