Mechanic - Small Engines and Operations

The Community Offender Management (COM) Division of Hennepin County's Department of Community Corrections & Rehabilitation (DOCCR) is seeking to fill a full-time Small Engines and Operations Mechanic vacancy located in North Minneapolis at the Community Offender Management Office, 3000 North Second Street.
 
The mission of the COM Division is to provide offenders with a safe opportunity to learn new job skills, gain self-confidence, and complete community improvement/restoration projects to benefit the residents of Hennepin County in a fiscally responsible way.

The primary duties and responsibilities for this position include:
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild motorized and non-motorized equipment; dispose of non-serviceable equipment; appraise serviceability of equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance of lawn and power equipment and utility trailers; check vehicles and equipment for service due; check and change oil, oil filters, and belts; grease and lubricate equipment.
  • Maintain inventory of all equipment including personal protective equipment for staff and crews; anticipate ordering of inventory; establish minimum ordering quantity.
  • Maintain electrical wiring and lights on utility trailers.
  • Fuel vehicles, wash vehicles, clean interiors, pressure wash engines and equipment; perform general cleaning work in garage and repair shop.
  • Sharpen lawn mower blades and saw chains.
  • Provide in-field assistance when necessary.
  • Distribute equipment to crew leaders.
  • Weld equipment and tools.
  • Data input of new inventory system and develop storage plan; loss prevention and reporting.
  • Recognize and respect cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services.
Best Qualified Candidates will have:
  • One of the following:
    • Three years of skilled mechanical and facilities maintenance experience including electrical and mechanical work HVAC.
    • Completion of a two year post-high school vocational-technical program with coursework in air conditioning/refrigeration/heating and electrical maintenance may be substituted for two years of experience.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools and equipment; welding/cutting equipment.
  • Ability to:
    • Read and interpret specifications and manuals.
    • Work as a team member.
    • Act without supervision when necessary.
    • Lift 1-10 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally with or without a reasonable accommodation.
    • Work effectively with an increasingly diverse client population.

Under facility licensing requirements, positions at the County Home School and/or Juvenile Detention Center are required to undergo a Department of Human Services Background Study (MS 245C.13). Convictions for certain crimes will have an effect on your ability to be hired according to the disqualification schedule listed in Minnesota Statute 245C.15. Individuals convicted for any level of Criminal Sexual Conduct are disqualified from being hired into any position within the DOCCR under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). Other past involvement with the criminal court system will not automatically disqualify you from working at the DOCCR; individual circumstances are reviewed and evaluated confidentially. If you do not know your exact conviction information, you can refer to your sentencing order or contact the county where you were convicted.
