Assistant Office Engineer – Transportation Engineer 2

The Opportunity:
 
WSDOT is currently seeking someone with the drive and passion in the field of civil engineering who can comfortably work at a desk and on active construction sites. The Tacoma Project Engineering Office in Fife, WA is looking for an Assistant Office Engineer who will assist with contract change orders, materials documentation, and payments and records documentation. The ideal candidate will have contract administration and construction background and can serve as both a design team member and a project inspector. The future incumbent will play a pivotal role in meeting the agency's goals.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Manage the record of materials to ensure accurate and complete approval, acceptance, and field verification documentation is achieved.
  • Track and analyze lab results that deviate from acceptable limits.
  • Prepare change orders and related documentation, estimates, and correspondence.
  • Assist with preparation, processing, and execution of all contract payment related items.
  • Interpret highway construction plans, specifications, and provisions.
  • Assist in on-site monitoring and reporting for environmental compliance and project safety.
  • Identify constructability issues and verify field changes are approved and implemented correctly.
  • Monitor construction activities to determine if the contract requirements are being met.
  • Assist in the preparation of design documentation, project summaries, cost estimates, contract plans, and specifications.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing, and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the design team, project offices, public, contractors, supervisors, and other department staff.
  • Interpret dates, identify problems and develop solutions using sound engineering judgment.
  • Train and lead team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
An ideal candidate will have the following:
  • Solid understanding of engineering principles and mathematical formulas.
  • The ability to read, interpret, understand, review and produce contract plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Strong communication skills both in the written and verbal form.
  • The ability of plan, schedule, and track multiple work activities
  • Experience operating survey equipment.
  • Proficient use of computer, including knowledge of engineering and computer aided drafting software applications.
  • Experience preparing contract change orders.
  • The ability to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • The ability to transport, manipulate, and move into position materials and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain certifications for construction materials testing.
  • Experience with WSDOT materials programs such as MTP, MATS, SAM, ROM, CCIS, & CAPS are preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
 
An ideal candidate will also have one of the following:
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or Bridge Engineer 1.
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training AND one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or Bridge Engineer 1.
  • A Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Traffic, or Transportation.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Note:
These positions are covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
