Adult Education Instructor

The Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation's (DOCCR) Adult Corrections Facility (ACF) is looking for an Adult Education Instructor. This position will deliver educational services to ACF residents who do not have their General Education Development (GED) or high school diploma. This is a part-time, benefit-earning position. The person hired will work days with a 32 hour per week schedule with the possibility to work up to 39 hours per week.

The ACF, located at 1145 Shenandoah Lane in Plymouth, MN, is a confinement center for adult offenders committed by the courts to serve a maximum sentence of one year. There is no public transportation to this location.

The mission of the DOCCR is to promote community safety, community restoration, and reduce the risk of re-offense.

ere will be a general salary adjustment of 2.5% to all pay steps.
 
The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:
  • Provide basic adult education coursework for individuals and groups; individualized reading, writing and math instruction, GED. preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to adult correctional residents based on individual needs.
  • Implement, update, and maintain an instructional program for basic computer literacy skills.
  • Develop and implement computer assisted instruction for individual and group learning.
  • Analyze residents' education needs, assist in developing educational goals, and assess resident progress through the use of individual learning plans and test administration.
  • Maintain a safe and secure learning environment by working with correctional staff to sustain resident discipline.
  • Prepare for instruction by locating appropriate lesson tools and obtaining information pertinent to lesson plan.
  • Schedule class times and track residents' participation in class by accurately recording attendance and progress.
  • Provide reports of residents' goals, progress, and attendance to funding authorities, probation/parole officers, judges, and community organizations.
  • Participate in continuing education, staff meetings, and in-service training as directed.
  • Recognize and respect cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services.

Best Qualified Candidates must be 21 years of age and have:
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in education or a related field and two or more years of experience teaching or training adults: reading, math, adult basic education (ABE), or GED preparation; experience and/or licensure in special education and/or reading, math or GED instruction is preferred.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience designing and implementing training programs used for computer literacy instruction.
  • Advanced skill in computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook or other comparable program.
  • Strong organizational skills; flexibility and the ability to work as a productive team member.
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Work effectively with an increasingly diverse client population.

Under facility licensing requirements, positions at the County Home School and/or Juvenile Detention Center are required to undergo a Department of Human Services Background Study (MS 245C.13). Convictions for certain crimes will have an effect on your ability to be hired according to the disqualification schedule listed in Minnesota Statute 245C.15. Individuals convicted for any level of Criminal Sexual Conduct are disqualified from being hired into any position within the DOCCR under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). Other past involvement with the criminal court system will not automatically disqualify you from working at the DOCCR; individual circumstances are reviewed and evaluated confidentially.
