Design Technician – TT3 In-Training

The Opportunity:  
 
Are you looking for an opportunity to work in a fast-paced design environment in an office assigned to Fish Passage projects around the entire Olympic Region? This may be the dream job you have been looking for. WSDOT has openings for two Design Technicians in the Olympia Project Engineering Office in Tumwater. The incumbents selected will become a part of a collaborative design team and will provide support for the delivery of fish passable water crossing design projects within WSDOT's Olympic Region. The primary responsibility of these positions will be utilizing Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) technology to develop, report, and present graphics, right-of-way sheets, and plans for approval in accordance with current design policies, standards, and guidelines.

Please note that these are in-training positions that offer a career path and on-the-job training. The in-training plan allows you to progress through the Transportation Technician field, and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Technician 3. Candidates will be considered as a Transportation Technician 2 or Transportation Technician 3, depending on qualifications.

Transportation Technician 2: $44,400 - $58,284
Transportation Technician 3: $50,292 - $65,916
 
 
These positions will perform the following work:
 

  • Assist in the development of electronic drawings for design using computer-aided design and drafting software.
  • Assist with the design and the development of plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Check plan sheets for adherence to WSDOT drafting standards.
  • Assist with engineering design tasks.
  • Assist in quantity calculations.
  • Utilize computer software to solve routine engineering problems.
  • Assist with meeting preparation, project documentation, and monitoring schedules.
  • Visibly demonstrate your commitment to the Department's safety program.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing, and work in a cooperative and courteous manner with the public, contractors, supervisors, and other department staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
 
  • Basic knowledge of principles and practices of highway engineering.
  • The ability to perform and check engineering calculations.
  • The ability to operate computer aided drafting and design systems for design of highway projects.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with designers and other team members.
  • A valid driver's license.
