Job Description Summary:

Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services, the Coordinator of Student Health Services functions within the framework of the California statutes of the Board of Registered Nursing regulating nursing practices, District policies, and Health Services program protocols, and coordinates the planning, development and supervision of a comprehensive Health Services program for students.

This position is fully funded with student fee assessment for health services. Students assessed the fee are those attending the San Luis Obispo and North County Campus sites of Cuesta College. The Coordinator of Student Health Services is charged with assuring comparable services for students attending on those sites.

Essential Functions & Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
- A valid, current California license as a registered nurse; AND a master's degree in nursing, a California Public Health Nurse certificate, current CPR and AED certificates;
OR
- A bachelor's degree in nursing, a California Public Health Nurse certificate, AND a master's degree in health education, sociology, psychology, counseling, health care administration, public health, or community health. Current CPR and AED certificates
OR
- The equivalent (candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment, indicated on the Equivalency Process link)

Preferred knowledge and experience:
- (SQ) A minimum of three years of nursing employment.
- (SQ) Demonstrated experience supervising staff and other health professionals.
- (SQ) Two (2) years of experience in a community college health setting, college or university, secondary school setting, comprehensive ambulatory care clinic, or public health agency that include clinic health supervision, program development, budget administration and direct supervision.
- Awareness of the philosophy and objectives of the California Community Colleges.
- Knowledge of legal requirements and regulations to assigned programs and services; understand college health functions that help facilitate student health and wellness and success.
- Familiarity with the Nurse Practice Act, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations, medical practice laws and ethics, infection control practices and state and local public health reporting regulations.
-Assumes overall responsibility for the operation of the Health Services medical, psychological and health education program; to develop, organize, direct and evaluate a variety of functions and activities in providing a comprehensive college student health services and student health education program.
-Develop, organize, implement and direct a variety of student health programs, services and activities; provide programs and services based on best practices and behavioral change theories; strong commitment to professional development and to maintaining innovation and currency to programs and services; knowledge of program marketing techniques.
-Provides leadership in departmental and division planning activities, annual program planning and program review activities, and compiles statistics, conducts research and needs assessments to evaluate and report program effectiveness.
-Performs the duties of a Registered Nurse including physical assessment, care for illness and injury, emergency first aid, health counseling and acute psychological assessment; administers appropriate treatment in accordance with the guidelines of the California Nurse Practice Act or specific licensing governing practice and existing program protocols and procedures.
-Provides health education and wellness assessments tailored to the individual student's needs. Implements current community health principles of communicable disease, epidemiology,
prevention and control.
-Develops and assesses measurable student learning outcomes relative to personal health and wellness behaviors.
-Selects, trains, schedules, supervises, evaluates and assures professional development of student health center personnel; coordinates the services of Independent Contractors, health care professionals and mental health professionals.
-Develops and monitors standard procedures and protocols consistent with the California Nursing Practice Act; assures compliance with local, state and federal health regulations; maintains a secure system of accurate and confidential health records in accordance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and other state regulations.
-Maintains current knowledge of legal requirements and regulations pertaining to the operation of the student health center; maintains local and state facility certificates and licensing requirements and regulations pertaining to the operations of the student health center; conducts periodic needs assessment and quality improvement evaluations.
-Orders, maintains and secures an inventory of necessary medical supplies, equipment and medication; oversees the maintenance of student health center facility.
-Develops plan for staffing needs, coordinates the selection, initial and ongoing training and evaluation of Health Services personnel and develops a plan for staff professional development.
-Crisis intervention skills
-Maintains current knowledge of clinical health, health screenings, laboratory and safety issues and implements current practices into the student health center procedures; reviews literature and research to maintain current knowledge of medical, psychological and health education theories and practices.
-Develops and monitors Health Services budget and conducts Health Services needs assessments; Oversees annual budget; controls and authorizes expenditures in accordance with established District policies and procedures.
- Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
